11.01.13 Dia de los Muertos - Day of the Dead inspired lunch

Dia de los Muertos (day of the dead) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The Holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration takes place on October 31, November 1, and November 2 in connection with the Christian holidays of Hallowmas: All Hallows' Eve All; Saints' Day, and All Souls' Day. Traditions of the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas honoring the deceased using sugar skulls and marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed as gifts left for the deceased at their grave sites. Scholars trace the origins of the modern Mexican holiday to indigenous observances dating back hundreds of years to an Aztec festival dedicated to the goddess Mictecacihatl. I spent time in Guatemala and fell in love with the country people and their festivals. This particular holiday is very important in Guatemala and each year I celebrate it with my friends.

One of the treats in our Halloween bags this year were skull erasers and the packaging reminded me of the sugar skull masks so I kept it and added it to the top of little S's lunch box for the occasion. His lunch was inspired by the imagery of the holiday.
