Dinovember Day 9 Dinosaurs enjoy a root beer
Today the dinosaurs got into more mischief than they have up until now. Today the dinosaurs got together and decided they wanted to try some root beer.
They tipped over the can and poured out the root beer so that they could all get a big drink.

Alphabet soup bath
I try to surprise Little S with fun bath times or sensory experiences at random times to keep things fun and alleviate some of the guilt I have that I sometimes have a lot of work to do for my paid job that means he gets less attention than I want to give him. Given my choice I would make being a mommy a paid job but this mommy has to work an outside job also.
I threw together for him a super fun and quick Alphabet soup bath.
I took his foam letters, numbers and sea creatures tossed them in the bath tub along with things I gathered from the kitchen including a funnel, a ladle and several spoons. I added some of his body hair wash to make bubbles and then added the chef to the soup.
He had so much fun playing with all the letters especially when we found out mommy could stick one to his tummy because it was wet it would stick. I stuck a shark and some letters and he laughed and laughed. After a while I added a bit more warm water because we had played so long things were getting chilly which gave him the idea he could wash his letters. He got his washcloth and went to the faucet end of the tub giving me the hands under and stare at mommy until the water comes out look. I turned the water on and he started washing the letters and numbers that floated by.
He didn't even want to stand up for his washing today (he's normally a shower kid) so he showered sitting in his bath and kept playing while I washed the bubbles off of his toys.
I scooped up all the letters, and utensils and put them in the bathroom sink to start to dry. After I had little S all set dressed and playing I went back and sprayed the foam letters with vinegar and water to kill any bacteria and let them finish drying. The kitchen items went into the dishwasher making clean up super fast and easy. This is definitely a winner!

11.26.13 Dinosaur Rollercoaster
Today Little S's dinosaurs came to life and wanted to try out his bead Roller Coaster for themselves. The ones that walk on all fours or had flat feet all jumped on the highest track and took the bead roller coaster for a ride.
Little S was not amused by this for even a second. When he saw them the first thing he did was rip off the dinosaurs, toss them to the ground and then bring me the bead roller coaster to remove the double sticky tape they used to stay on. How could they!

11.26.13 Turkey inspired lunch 2
Today I made for Little S another Turkey inspired turkey less lunch.
Main Compartment:
Turkey - body is half a pear with a piece removed from the bottom to sit flat. The pear turkey has tail feathers made from diced pineapple and a red grape in a toothpick inserted into the back of the turkey. The toothpicks were removed prior to giving little S the lunch because they are very pointy and not the flat kind. His eyes were cut from a single cranberry raisin and his nose is a piece of carrot.
Bedding - the turkey is sitting on a bed of diced carrot.
Top Right Compartment:
Cheesy Chicken nuggets
Bottom Right Compartment:
veggie chips

11.25.13 first snow shovel experiance
Today it snowed about an inch to and inch and a half; which if you live anywhere that snows is just enough to cover your lawn even if it's a little shaggy, and enough to cause accidents because no one remembers how to slow down or start the stopping process more than 2 inches before the line, and enough to make sure you have to shovel the sidewalk.
We have a city ordinance where we live that within 24 hours of the stopping of the snow you must have your sidewalks completely cleared of snow all the way to your door. These are no ordinary sidewalks we have the wide ones so it takes 3 passes with a large shovel or you have to go sideways. If you don't shovel the snow you get a nasty reminder one time from the postal worker assigned to your house and then they rat you out to the city apparently. I have gotten the note once when I was away for a long weekend and it snowed the day I left.
M and I came across a little person snow shovel the other day and I couldn't resist getting it for little S. He loves swiffering, sweeping and raking maybe he'd love shoveling also. As it turns out we got to try out that theory today.
I bundled little S into one of his six snow suits, put on his new snow boots, fought with him three times to leave the dragon hat on which he promptly refused and ripped off his head each of the three times and then realized. Dang mommy is the worst mommy ever - he didn't have mittens or gloves.
We headed out once I was as bundled as I could get and went to get the shovel out of the garage for mommy. I showed him how to shovel and he looked at me like I was nuts. It took exactly three minutes before he handed me his shovel to use and went on an adventure making footprints in the yard. I placed his shovel against one of our large trees that line the street and kept shoveling with mine. When he saw he ran over got his shovel and crying handed it to me so I could use it and it wouldn't just be left there. So since I needed to get us in faster as he had no mittens.. I held his shovel and quickly finished shoveling with mine.
Then despite the cold the child proceeded to run through the snow making as many tracks as possible. (When I say run remember the boy is 18 months he runs but its not knee pumping its fast waddling but MAN that kid can move). he was trying to get to all the parts of the snow that were flat to make Little S prints.. it was stinking adorable. I grabbed him and hauled him back inside and spent the next 5 minutes trying to get his hands warm again.
I did get him gloves the next day.

11.25.13 Dinovember Day 7 - Dinosaurs do a word find with color crayons
If yesterday's Dinovember was a bit too over the top in thinking this one should make up for it. Little S awoke today to find his dinosaurs completing a word search using team work and crayons.
Recently Little S has proven that he is ready for crayons at restaurants , he colored with them, he played with them and he didn't try to eat them so yay!!!!! for being a big boy. Up until now if the server left the crayons they went into mommy's bag, if they asked I said no to the crayons, so mommy has a stash of little crayons in all our travel bags that we can now pull out whenever we need to entertain. This has actually come in handy before when we were at a nice restuaruant and the table behind us had a few little girls who needed a distraction. I over heard the mommy say man I wish this restaurant had crayons or something. I pulled out a a couple packages and cheerfully handed them over. The girls were able to play quietly and the mom and dad could hold a conversation.
Today the dinosaurs broke into my crayon stash and took a package, then they got together and worked on a word search. Even these tiny crayons were bigger than the little dinosaurs so they had to work in teams of two.
Little S was so excited to see them playing with the crayons he helped them finish coloring the page.

11,25,13 Turkey inspired lunch
Personally I dispise turkey not the bird itself but luckily for it the taste of the meat. I decided that Little S should have a turkey lunch in which no turkeys were harmed in the making.

Dinovember Day 6 - Dino's test a hypothesis
The Dinosaurs had spent a lot of time wondering and thinking about how the pyramids were created. It seemed so unlikely to them that tiny humans could have picked up and carried those heavy blocks of stone so far to build them. After some conversation they decided to find out using the scientific method.
Scientific Method Step 1: Purpose or Question? What did they want to learn
Dino Answer: How the pyramids were built by tiny humans.
Scientific Method Step 2: Research
Dino Action: the Dinosaurs split up into groups:
Group 1 - logged onto the internet to look up options
Group 2- viewed hours of TV
Group 3 - read books
Once the research period was over the dinosaurs came together with their findings and discussed it.
Scientific Method step 3: Hypothesis what do you predict the answer is
Dino Hypothesis: The dinosaurs thought there could be two possible options after their research. Hypothesis 1: the humans used logs to help move the stones into place. Hypothesis 2: Aliens helped to move, and construct the pyramids.
Scientific Method step 4: Experiment
The dinosaurs got several new pencils and some cardboard and little S's blocks. Working together they moved several of the blocks to form Little S's name. Just before they were finished the aliens beamed down and told them they were doing it wrong.
The dinosaurs are using logs (pencils and cardboard) to make skids like the ancient Egyptians may have.
The dinosaurs had to move seven heavy block to spell little S's name.
These are the aliens beaming down ( space ship is two stacking cups snapped together - tractor beam is 3 wooden blocks placed to show random images as alien writing)
Scientific Method Step 5: Analysis
Dino Answer: it was difficult moving the blocks into place with their large bodies even using the logs and the aliens that came said they were doing it incorrectly.
Scientific Method Step 6: Conclusion - was the hypothesis correct?
Dino Answer: It seems in this case that the arrival of the aliens helped to disprove hypothesis 1 and aided in the validity of hypothesis 2.
This is what Little S awoke to find. Several dinosaurs were moving a block on pencils and two others were positioning the blocks to spell his name. They conducted their experiment in front of a pyramid created by the aliens who are beaming down.

Dinovember Day 5 - A special Message for little S
Today Little S's dinosaurs came to life and worked together to send him a special message.
First they got out our container of small letters (these are refrigerator magnet letters without the magnets). Then they opened the container and used the lid to help them slide the letters down. Several Dino's helped sort and move the letters to form the message.
RAWR is dinosaur for I love you.

Dinovember Day 4 - Stolen Submarine and Boat Bath experiance
Today Little S's dinosaurs came to life and stole his bath submarine and Mike the Knight's boat to experience a bubble bath. Little S had a few surprises awaiting him this morning; first he had a bath since we went to the water park and he played in the splash area he has loved taking showers, second he had bubbles - he's never had bubbles before, and third his bath was full of dinosaurs.
It took little S a while to stop trying to get the bubbles off his hands like they were a contagion and just relax and play. Once he relaxed he played with all the dinosaurs and tried sinking them in the boat.
We discovered that with 5 dinosaurs the boat will still float and 7 dinosaurs sink the boat.

The Day of the Doctor inspired lunch.
Tomorrow 11.23.13 is the Day of the Doctor to celebrate the 50th anniversary there will be a global Dr Who event. To celebrate I used this to inspire Little S's lunch today.
Steven Moffat (lead writer and executive producer, Doctor Who) has announced, ‘The Doctor has always been a time traveller - now he’s travelling time zones. On 23 November, it won’t be the bad guys conquering the Earth - everywhere it will be The Day of the Doctor!’
That’s because it’s been announced the 50th anniversary special will be enjoyed by millions across six continents as for the first time ever, on 23 November, Doctor Who will be broadcast across the planet in a global simulcast.
So, whilst here in the UK we’re watching The Day of the Doctor on BBC One, all across the world from Canada to Colombia, Brazil to Botswana and Myanmar to Mexico, viewers in at least 75 countries will be able to tune into one of the Time Lord’s most epic adventures as he faces the dreaded Daleks and the return of the Zygons! The US, Australia and Canada have also signed up for the simulcast which will be shown in numerous countries across Europe, Latin America and Africa.
On top of the BBC One and global TV broadcast, hundreds of cinemas in the UK and across the world also plan to screen the hotly anticipated episode.
Main Compartment:
American Cheese Dr Who - these were cut free hand from a slice of American cheese
Tardis Quesadilla - I cut a tortilla into two police box shapes and added the remaining American cheese from the Dr Who and heated until melted. Once it cooled while I was cutting the carrot sticks, I painted it blue with a drop of food coloring and 2 drops of water. I applied the food coloring with a Q-Tip and a toothpick.
Top Right Compartment:
Pretzel and Carrot sticks
Bottom Right Compartment:
Stars - These are strawberry frozen yogurt stars created by putting the yogurt into a silicon ice cube mold and freezing over night.

Old school TV - a slice of bread coated in peanut butter and cut into a boxy TV shape. Pretzel antenna and pretzel knobs.
1/2 a banana
Top Right Compartment:
Diced Turkey and Ham
1/2 string cheese
Bottom Right Compartment:
Pretzel sticks
Mini Silicone cup of pumpkin and sunflower seeds
Dinovember Day 3 - Bed/Nap time story
Since Little S is 18 months and this is the first year I am doing Dinovember I want to spark his imagination with things that are familiar or educational. I want to use this year as the ground work for the up coming years when I get crazy with his dinosaurs. As this year I am also challenged with only have 2 inch dinosaurs to work with I am getting creative with the things they are doing on a smaller scale.
Today the Dinosaurs are reading or listening to a bedtime story. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom which happens to be one of my favorite books to read Little S and one that he likes listening to which is good since often I am reciting the book to him while we are shopping and no where near the book. (I do this with a lot of his books he seems to think it's funny)
I was going through our squishy toy bin yesterday and came across one that was a dinosaur rather than a dragon and thought: how can I use one big dinosaur with my little ones and the reading idea popped into my head. This is how it turned out.
An unexpected listener the boy kittysaurus
In case you were wondering about the squishy toy bin I mentioned our toys are organized into several bins in a wall unit we have in our family room so that they can be put away in their proper homes and Little S can learn organization. (He's more OCD than Mommy is so he really doesn't need help in this arena as it turns out)
This is how we store our toys each box has a label for what types of toys are inside, the top row is more mommy things:
Scrapbook and pictures, flashcards and workbooks, school supplies, and sensory items we have used recently.
The middle row is dress up (costumes and masks), puppets, squishy toys (stuffed animals), and play food.
The bottom row houses: musical instruments, noisy toys (anything that drives mommy nuts with songs), stacking toys, and movies that he can watch.

Dinovember Day 2 November 20 2013 - Archaeological Dig
Today our dinosaurs have traveled to an archaeological site and started an official dig. In an odd twist of the space time continuum you can see they are in the process of discovering human remains.
Little S playing with the dinosaurs and eating the sand. (Brown sugar) He didn't try the skeleton which happened to be a gummy skeleton he got while trick or treating.

11.20.13 Universal Children's Day inspired lunch
November 20, 2013 is the Universal Children's Day. First proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954, it was established to encourage all countries to institute a day, firstly to promote mutual exchange and understanding among children and secondly to initiate action to benefit and promote the welfare of the world's children. It was also chosen as the day to celebrate childhood and is celebrated annually.
November 20 is also the anniversary of the day when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959. The Convention on the Rights of the Child was then signed on the same day in 1989, which has since been ratified by 191 states. Universal Children's Day is preceded by International Men's Day on November 19 creating a 48 hour celebration of men and children respectively during which time the positive roles men play in children's lives are recognized.
The legal definition of "child" generally refers to a minor, otherwise known as a person younger than the age of majority. "Child" may also describe a relationship with a parent, such as sons and daughters of any age. (With material from: Wikipedia)

Dinovember Day 1 - November 19 2014
I am late coming into the month of Dinovember. My sister was kind enough to share a post she had seen on Facebook of a father who turns the month of November into Dinovember. In November he has his child's plastic and toy dinosaurs create mischief like the elf on the shelf. My schedule from Thanksgiving to New Year's is really full. We celebrate Hanukkah (dates vary), Saint Nicholas (Dec 5-6), Winter Solstice (around Dec 20), advent calendars all month, Yule, and Christmas. Wheewww that's a lot going on to add in a Elf on a Shelf project also in comparison during November outside of holiday shopping and a big dinner I seem to have free time. Today was my first foray into Dinovember.
To be honest Little S has Dragons not Dino's so I had to bust out the ones I have stashed for lunches and crafts and plan to give the kid some dinosaurs over the next year.
Day 1 of Dinovember 2014 adventures
Jurassic Park Field Trip
The dinosaurs all got up super early while it was still dark outside and loaded into the stolen sesame street school bus. The dinosaurs had made their own school like banner to hang on the bus and attached it before heading out on their first adventure.
They arrived just after 5am in the kitchen waiting for their little boy to come to breakfast. The pterodactyl needed more wing span than the bus would allow with all the tails so he decided to ride on top of the bus.
They concluded their tour at the highchair of little S.

Bathtub sidewalk chalk painting
Generally by Friday I have spent 50-60 hours working and 45-55 of those hours happen when little S is with me. I am grateful that I work from home I just feel guilty because sometimes mommy needs to put her head down and bust through a spreadsheet and can't stop to read the book more than 10 times. I try to put together an activity each Friday that we can do so he get's a sensory play experience to celebrate the coming weekend.
Today we whipped up some super easy sidewalk chalk that we played with in the bathtub:
The ingredients:
corn starch - about 2-3 cups
water - about 1 cup
food coloring - 2 drops each color - you may need more the purple needed a lot more.
Craft sponge paint brushes.
muffin tin
I mixed a big batch of the cornstarch and water then poured it into the muffin tin to create separate colors - this is about the consistency of pancake batter which is difficult to tell from the pictures. If you add too much cornstarch it becomes a rock and in my experience although you could add more water and try to loosen it up it's easier and less frustrating to start over.
Next I mixed in a few drops of food coloring into each cup and added a craft brush. I stripped little S naked and put all of the fun in the bathtub. I got a strange look at first like a what am I supposed to do with this in the way of me getting to the water. (He LOVES to play in the water) Once I showed him that he could paint the side of the tub or drip it around he got the idea and played a good 30 minutes or so before we started the clean up/play/shower process. I took some pictures along the way so you can see how it went.
This is us just getting started:
Splash painting is fun mommy:
A big mess that is an easy clean up, just turn the shower on and watch the colors all run out of the tub. This project made bath time super fun. He got to explore color, using a paint brush, dripping versus brushing, how cold the chalk paints were, and what it felt like when they dried on him. He also got to watch the blending of colors during clean up and we shared a fun and creative play experience that total cost was less than 60 cents. I had the craft brushes - I got a big package at Nasco for 1.08 for 20 brushes so the cost for the 6 would be 30 cents. I used 2 cups of cornstarch about 20 cents worth since the box was 80 cents total and a few drops of food coloring I already had maybe 10 total cent value for a total cost on the project of 60 cents. I washed and dried the craft brushes, they are good for our next project.
